“How to Mall Walk” – sounds simple right?! If you are a new resident to the Valley, you may already be hearing to brace for those severe hot days when temps rise.
Even tougher during those brutal long months when you have kiddos to entertain! Have no fear, you can join us and walk the mall all summer long and still get those steps in!
When the Arizona heat cranks up, outdoor strolls with the kids can quickly turn into a sweaty, exhausting battle.
Mall walking is the perfect way to stay active, let little ones burn energy, and even meet other moms while enjoying a cool, air-conditioned space.
Many malls in the East Valley actually encourage walkers by opening early, providing a safe and family-friendly environment, and even offering play areas for a mid-walk break! Here are some details and helpful tips to consider:

Mall Walking Basics for Moms
If you’re new to mall walking, it’s super easy to get started. Most malls open their doors an hour or two before the stores officially open, giving walkers a quiet and spacious area to move freely. Here’s what you need to know:
- Check mall hours – Most malls open around 9 AM for walkers, but some may allow early access as early as 7 AM.
- Wear comfy shoes – While it’s tempting to throw on flip-flops, opt for sneakers to keep your feet happy.
- Bring snacks & water – Even indoors, hydration is key, especially for little ones (here’s our ultimate list of favorite no-melt Arizona snacks for the summer)
- Take advantage of benches & play areas – Malls have great seating spots for snack breaks, and many have designated play zones (My favorite is Chandler Mall)
Best Malls for Walking & Play in the East Valley
Not all malls are created equal when it comes to being kid-friendly. Here are some of the best options in the East Valley:
1. Chandler Fashion Center (Chandler, AZ)
- Opens early for walkers
- Has a large, enclosed play area near the food court
- Plenty of wide walkways and seating
- Splash pad outside for extra fun (when it’s not too hot!)
2. Arizona Mills (Tempe, AZ)
- Great for long-distance walkers since it’s a full-circle layout
- The SEA LIFE Aquarium & LEGOLAND Discovery Center are fun post-walk stops (get FREE admission to both with your Get Out Pass; use code XOXOEVM for the best deal).
- Indoor carousel and small play area
3. SanTan Village (Gilbert, AZ)
- Although it’s an outdoor mall, shaded areas and misters make it bearable
- Has a great playground near the splash pad
- Perfect for combining mall walking with errands
4. Superstition Springs Center (Mesa, AZ)
- Has an indoor playground
- Features a train ride for little ones
- Double decker carousel ($5/ride)
- Less crowded than some of the larger malls
